SOLIEL #25-1011-5 (12" Tack Fused Round with Wrought Iron Stand)
Thunderstorms have a magic, and fascination for many. Throughout history man has applied many beliefs and explanations to this fascinating phenomena in the heavens. Dating as far back as ancient carvings on the inside of cave walls., in the Christian faith a thunderstorm wa warning of the great flood created by God to cleanse the earth of evil and begin anew in the story of Noah's arch. In Greek mythology, Zeus was recognized as King of the Gods, also called "the one who thunders above". In Germanic and Celtic lore, thunderstorms were believed to be the noise of a battle where Thor was fighting the enemies of man. The stories, beliefs and explanations are endless.
But to all, the sounds of thunder, the power, fear and beauty of lightening flashing mightily down from the heavens, the clean fresh smell of the air, and the strength of the winds keep us mindful of the uncontrollable power of Mother Nature.
This mighty demonstration of force is essential to the survival of our plant as we know it. Rain sustains life on earth for all living things and the powerful bolts of lightening discharge energy going hand and hand with in the rains. Where lightening bolts connect with land, fires burn away the scrub brush and the old decay, allowing for the birth of new life when nurtured by the sun.
SOLIEL means the sun. Through this beautiful glass sculpture I have attempted to recreated the feeling and beauty of a thunderstorm as often seen over our southern gulf waters in the summer time. I have named it for that which will shine again tomorrow.
