Giraffe Silhouette - #1 in Safari Series

Fused Glass Frit
Art Contest
2012 entry
Frit Used: 90 coe
Description
My giraffe bowl is the first glass piece in my "Safari Series."  The bowl is 11" in diameter, and is made with red and clear Bullseye glass, and 90coe Bullseye black powdered frit.

I first created the bowl blank using red 90coe Bullseye glass with a clear cap - taken to full fuse.  I cold-worked the blank a little on my Diamond Max disc grinder.  Then I dumped a bunch of Bullseye 90coe black powder (frit) on the blank.  Using a rubber-tipped tool, I moved the black glass powder around to create the giraffe and terra firma under its feet.  I tack-fired this, and I found out that the powder must be applied very thickly to get a good silhouette.  I actually applied the black glass powder three times altogether, and tack-fused it each time.  The final step was to make the chiseled edge on the bowl on a CrystalMaster lap machine.

This piece is now in the collection of a woman in northern Michigan.  #2 in the series has been imagined, and is on its way into the physical!
