My overall idea for this piece was to create a book that seemed to be bursting with character, something that showcased the exciting and dangerous spirit of adventure had whenever someone dives into the pages of a book. Just like the typical adventure story, the ocean is known for being both infinite and wildly unpredictable, so an ocean-themed tale seemed the perfect way to depict my piece's message. Earth's oceans are known for being impossible to contain, so I knew making a neat and orderly piece was out of the question. I built up drops of transparent blue glass to make water seem to gush forward off the pages and drip down over the sides. I scorched the binding and parts of the pages to show this book has had many adventurers throughout its years. The carefree display of the splashing waves represent the fun and inviting side to adventure stories- that "special something" that draws someone to the book they wind up choosing. On the other hand, the juxtaposition of the shark fin bookmark and bite taken out of the cover, serve as a warning to the possible dangers that lurk as the reader dives deeper into the story.
This piece was made using 100% soft glass rods using a Hot Head torch. It's dimensions are approx.: 1.5" x 1.5" (measurements include shark fin, but do not include pendant's bail).
