  •   Easy to Use Kiln

Pros : Fast set-up. Pre-set programs. Light weight, relatively to a brick kiln. large firing area, 16 inches square. consistent firing results
Cons : Depth/height only 3 inches. But I knew that before I bought it. So really no cons.
Other Thoughts : Recommend using thin fire shelf paper. In addition, I kiln wash to protect delicate material of kiln. Love the clamshell design, makes it so easy to place glass onto kiln surface.

  •   Versatile kiln, few problems

Pros : This kiln has a lot of useable space but not much depth (3 inches). It fires and cools quickly without radiating as much heat. Because it does not have to heat up bricks as well as your project, the electrical cost is small. The quartz elements have a long life and don't need replacing like a brick kiln,nor will you eventually have to replace the lid. The controller is separate making it easier to fit in a small space, and easy to replace if ever needed. It is light weight compared to a brick kiln,so simple to get it home or move it. This kiln is more expensive to start with, but you don't have to replace elements, or lid. When you combine that with the low electric draw, it actually becomes cheaper than a comparably sized brick kiln over its life.
Cons : Two downsides. First the material it is made out of is EXTREMELY fragile. If you drop a mold on it it makes a dent. Be very careful not to scratch the interior. Even sliding a piece acrossed the floor of the kiln can damage it. You can get a tube of stuff to repair it, but it is not as flat and smooth a finish as it started with. Secondly, the controller is frustrating to figure out how to customize. There are several pre-set programs which work well, but I wanted to do castings which don't fit in to one of those pre-made programs. I think the benefits far outway the negatives and I am completely happy with this kiln.
Other Thoughts : This kiln comes in either a 15amp, household circuit or 20 amp which requires a heavier gauge wire and special plug in. The 20 gauge heats up faster, saving electricity and time, but it cost an additional $100 to have the electrician put in the special plug on an existing 20 amp line.

The Ring of Fire Artist Challenge, lasting from May-June, sparked the interest of artists of varied media all across the country. While Delphi received entries of paper, glass, ceramics, wire, jewelry, etc., it was a select group of 10 products that united them all. Every eligible entry incorporated at least one of 10 unique products making up the Ring of Fire. These products included copper metal mesh, millifiori, clear glaze, dichroic scrap, recycled glass tiles, metallic tiles, color slide, krafty blok, fine silver wire and pressed flowers. Ring of Fire Artist Challenge Pushes the Limits of Creativity

Delphi Glass and ArtFire, the premier marketplace for handmade crafts, announce a new online art contest. The Ring of Fire Artist Challenge is open to all artisans. Entries are being accepted now. Contest ends June 30 and winners announced July 9, 2010. Following its annual festivities for National Art Glass Month, Delphi has organized another online event with the help of its partner ArtFire. The first annual Ring of Fire Artist Challenge is designed for all artisans of all crafts and abilities, inviting them to use common art supplies in new and creative ways. Artisans are asked to choose one or more items from the 10 products that make up the Ring of Fire. These items range from patterned dichroic glass and fine silver wire to mosaic tiles made entirely from recycled glass. Who says that learning cant be fun? The Kay Bain Weiner Foundation, which is dedicated to sharing information about glass art, recently proved that its certainly possible when it sponsored a fun and successful cruise to the western Caribbean to help support its educational goals. Glass Enthusiasts Coming Together On January 10, 2010, the KBW Foundation sponsored a cruise on Celebrity Solstice that set sail for the western Caribbean. This was the Foundations first glass art conference cruise. There were over 148 glass enthusiasts on boardbeginners to experts from Alaska to Florida, from California to New Hampshire to Israelto participate in this inaugural event. Workshops, lectures, and demonstrations devoted to the various types of glass art, the business of glass, and the beauty of glass made up a large part of the experience.
