Fusing with Reactive Glasses Class Details

Fusing with Reactive Glasses

With:  Roy Kapp

One Day Only:

Where:  Delphi's Lansing Creativity Center

When:  11:00 am - 5:00 pm

Approx. Material Cost: Included - Gotta love it!

Experience Required: We're sorry to say ... Students must have previous fusing experience, such as a beginning fusing class like Fusing Is Fun or Fusing Fundamentals.

Type of Class: Demonstration and hands-on project

Class Description:  Come explore the reactive capabilities of fusible glasses.  Discover the fun and creative possibilities of fusing glasses that produce interesting effects by chemical reactions.  While fusing in a kiln the chemicals that help give the glass it’s color can react with certain chemicals in other glasses.  This reaction occurs at the interface of where the glasses meet.  This class will help you figure out which glasses react with other glasses and how to use this information to enhance your work.  The knowledge gained is also valuable if you are trying to avoid the accidental reaction that can ruin a piece.  We know nothing is worse than an unwanted surprise.  Students will have an opportunity to work with a variety of reactive glasses and create sample tiles to keep for further reference. Firing schedules and related topics will also be covered.

Safety:     Not to fear, glass is safe however we do have a few safety procedures to ensure this.
Closed toed shoes are recommended when cutting or handling glass.
Safety glasses should be worn during class. Glasses will be provided if necessary.

Tools & Materials Included: An outline and printed fusing schedules will be provided.
Use of glass cutting tools.  Use of our grinders and saws. Fusible glass for class projects.

Additional Tools & Materials: Pen/paper for notes - we'll share things you won't want to forget.

Cancellation Policy:          Life happens, we totally understand.  If you are unable to join class, please contact us at 517-394-4685, or leave us an email at [email protected], prior to class starting for a refund or to be added to a future class.

  •   Good class

Pros : A lot of information! Good class for learning how to create cool effects (or avoid them) when fusing certain glasses together. I liked it. I was not ever bored even though it’s a lot of talking. Roy passed around many examples/samples of what happens when you combine things. He’s a good teacher.
Cons : The pieces we made in class will be fired and sent later. I wished I could have seen what everyone else’s stuff will look like after firing! It’s just a limitation of the class format though. No time for firing the same day.

Pros : Roy teaches in a way that makes you try what you think you can't do. Then you find out you can! He is truly a good person and his classes are so informative, fun and mind expanding. If you can take his class...do it!
Cons : Never enough time for all the ideas that pop up during class! Must take more than one.

  •   Very helpful information!

Pros : I probably could have learned everything with reading and trail and error but now I feel I can create projects with reactive glass without too many errors. I have a much better understanding of reactive glass and its properties thanks to Roy and all his samples. I took the class yesterday and when loading my kiln at home today, I put in a piece created with reactive glass.
Cons : None.
