Color Freedom Pet Portrait Class - Stained Glass with Donna Van Hooser

With:  Donna Van Hooser

Starts:        Ends:

Where:  Delphi's Lansing Creativity Center

When:  9:00 am - 5:00 pm

Approx. Material Cost: Included

Experience Required: Intermediate and Advanced mosaic experience

Type of Class: Demonstration and hands-on project

Class Description: In this class we will use greyscale values rather than traditional colors to create form and
expression in creating a mosaic pet portrait. Precision cutting techniques will be covered, as
well as andamento, glass selection and shading.
Since this technique is more time consuming, a finished portrait is not expected at the end of the
three-day workshop, however, the eyes and a good portion of the face can be completed,
depending on the experience of each student. This workshop is intended for intermediate or
advanced mosaic artists and should not be used as an introduction to making mosaics.
Students can either work on a black and white photo provided by the instructor, or can provide a
PHOTO prior to the class. Photos provided by the students should be high resolution showing
good detail (not out of focus) and have fairly strong contrast between values.
The instructor will map out the design before the class if using a photo supplied by the student
prior to the class.
A phone with a camera is recommended, as we will be using this as a tool in class to see
grayscale values.

Safety: Please wear safety glasses when cutting glass, provided if needed.

Tools & Materials Included: Includes all materials, use of our tools

Additional Tools & Materials: Students may want to bring: Mosaic nippers or tools to work with stained glass.
The instructor will be contacting students regarding photos for their project ans recommending tools.

See the cancellation policy.

  •   Worked Hard & Learned A Lot

Pros : All materials supplied and prepared including many take-home supplies. Very knowledgeable and experienced teacher with good communication skills. Small class made up of interesting people from many places who also contributed individual knowledge, tips, and techniques. Good working space with all necessary tools & equipment. Helpful and friendly staff.
Cons : Teacher had a cold that affected her voice (feel better soon, Donna!). Too many wonderful things available for immediate purchase.
Other Thoughts : This 3-day class left me exhausted at the end of each day and ready to start again the next. An intense learning experience that expanded my mosaic knowledge and allowed me to meet and interact with people from many different backgrounds whom I would not have otherwise met. Definitely worth it.

Pros : Well planned and well prepared. Pictures and graphs as well as glass selections and other materials were sorted and ready. The handouts were terrific and additional info given in class. Enough glass was handed out at the end of class to finish the project. Last, but certainly not least, Donna is a lovely person, she presents the material well and tries to push us into an entirely new thought process. She also does all of this while maintaining a good sense of humor. As for the Delphi location and staff, what can I say? The people of Michigan were all very friendly, the Delphi staff were interested in what we were doing and very supportive and they all bent over backwards to help us. Their class room was really nice and well lit and there were glass grinders from different manufacturers for our use. Any questions before the class were answered quickly including where to stay. And of course we got to shop and choose glass in their large, well-stocked showroom.
Cons : I wish the class could have been a day or two longer BUT it is such an intense experience that we were really wiped out and ready to try this on our own by the time the class ended on the third day. The only other "negative" is that I couldn't fit Donna in my suitcase and bring her home with me!
Other Thoughts : It would be very nice to have a small refrigerator in the classroom so we can bring lunches and drinks. Nuff said on that. A small pamphlet of things to do while in Lansing would be great. A must do is the MSU dairy store for ice cream and cheese. What bar serves local beers or wines? Local restaurants you and your staff recommend and any places of interest. Things for spouses to do while students are in class.

  •   One Awesome Weekend

Pros : Class size was perfect. We could easily see and hear Donna speak. The use of the grinders was also helpful, so much so, that I purchased one! The class discount and shopping convenience right in the store was perfect. The staff was helpful and friendly. Donna is a great instructor, she helped us with this rather upside down way of looking at hues and is very open to questions and helping us see the transitions, rather than doing it for us. Would most definitely recommend Delphi for a class location as well as Donna for an instructor,
Cons : The stools we sat on 8 hours a day were very very uncomfortable. I know that anything would be uncomfortable for that long, but they could seriously use more padding around the front of the seat. A small fridge in the classroom for lunches would also be convenient.

  •   Donna is great!

Pros : Learned more than a new technique. I have a whole new way of looking at color, shading and glass. Thanks for offering this fun class!
Cons : No place to eat lunch onsite
Other Thoughts : It was nice of Delphi to offer the option to purchase of lunch. Wish I’d known this sooner. Also was unclear what % discount students received on purchases. Some received 15%, others 20%
