3-Day Color Freedom Mixed Media Workshop with Donna Van Hooser

50 star rating (2 reviews)

Starts:        Ends:

Where:  Delphi's Lansing Creativity Center

When:  10:00 am - 5:00 pm

Approx. Material Cost: Everything is included!

Experience Required: Intermediate and Advanced mosaic experience

Type of Class: Demonstration and hands-on project

Class Description:
In this class we will select glass colors using greyscale values rather than traditional colors to
create a still life image in mosaic. Precision cutting techniques will be covered, as well as
andamento, glass selection and shading.
Since this technique is more time consuming, a finished piece is not expected at the end of the
three day workshop, however guidance will be given during the class for the students to be able
to finish their mosaics on their own.
Students will select from one of nine images provided by the instructor for the class. These
images have been chosen for ideal contrast and detail for this technique.
All materials are provided, including a 10x10 inch prepared substrate with photo and drawing,
carbon paper to transfer, glue, and the loan of various tools to use during the workshop.
A variety of mosaic mediums will be provided, including stained glass, hand made ceramic tiles,
unglazed porcelain tiles, filati, and additional elements in a variety of colors.
During the workshop, while there is a bit of instruction addressed to the entire class (cutting,
andamento, and discussion of values/tones) I would say that 90% of the class is one-on-one
instruction and assistance with andamento and glass selection.
An email will be sent close to the time of the workshop with a list of any additional items
students may wish to bring. The instructor will have a limited number of tools available for
students to use as well.
The class usually starts at 10:00 am each day and finishes at 5:00 pm, with a break for lunch.

Safety: Not to fear, glass is safe however we do have a few safety procedures to ensure this.
Closed toed shoes are recommended when cutting or handling glass.
Safety glasses should be worn during class. Glasses will be provided if necessary.

Materials Included: Includes all materials - just bring yourself (and your tools if you want to).

Additional Tools & Materials: Students may want to bring: Mosaic nippers or tools to work with stained glass.
The instructor will be contacting students regarding photos for their project and recommending tools.

Cancellation Policy:  Life happens, we totally understand.  If you are unable to join class, please contact us at 517-394-4685, or leave us an email at [email protected], prior to class starting for a refund or to be added to a future class.

Pros : This was a very challenging workshop as it required me to look at color in a different way. Besides the beauty in the color, I needed to determine its value to work at creating a mosaic with a 3D appearance. Donna was very patient and always explained the correct method of application needed to ensure the best end results. She was also very generous in providing supplies, glass and tiles. Donna was well prepared, her instruction was excellent and the workshop was laid out in an organized manner.
Cons : Understanding color value takes lots of practice...I am certainly still learning. I also could improve my nipping skills.
Other Thoughts : I enjoyed the time I spent with Donna and my peers. It showed me I have lots to learn!

Pros : I have taken several classes with Donna at Delphi and they have all been great. Donna is a talented artist and instructor. She is upbeat and patient and always generous with her time and supplies. Even though this was my third class with her, I picked up many useful tips. I know that I would never have progressed with my mosaics without her instruction.
Cons :
Other Thoughts : I hope that Delphi will continue to offer mosaic classes with Donna and other instructors.
