Class Description:
If you have ever wanted to have the freedom and flexibility to make a mold that was unique to you and your art, then this is the class for you. Join glass artist and SilkeMat creator Barbara Cashman for this fun and informative class.
This 2-day workshop will walk you through the basics, and cover the advantages of using SilkeMat (a non-carcinogenic fiber blanket) and SilkeMat Rigidizer to make soft and rigid molds; strong enough to face many many firings.
The planned glass projects will include a Drop Ring Vase, a casting and a potmelt. In addition,you will make a JELLYFISH mold, an organic Slump Mold and a vitrigraph mold to take home. Projects may adapt with the dynamics of the class, but that's what creativity is all about. If there is time, you will also have the opportunity to discuss a personal project as a group, so I encourage you to bring an item with you that you would like to make a mold from in the future. This is something unique to you. Your project will be discussed in class as the best way to approach the process. This is a great opportunity for questions and problem-solving for the entire class.

Safety: Not to fear, glass is safe however we do have a few safety procedures to ensure this.
Closed toed shoes are recommended when cutting or handling glass.
Safety glasses should be worn during class. Glasses will be provided if necessary.

Barbara J Cashman has been a glass fuser since 1979 and was an early pioneer in commercial fused glass tile, opening GlasTile Inc. in 1990, which produced quality handmade production and custom glass tile. A creative problem solver, Barbara was encouraged to find a safe, non-carcinogenic refractory product that the hobbyist and professional alike would be comfortable to use in their glass art processes. Enter SilkeMat. From there, she has added a special rigidizer for the refractory blanket and an easy-to-use devitrification solution for use on glasses prone to devitrification. Barbara resides in Greensboro NC with her husband John O'Brien & presently, 5 furry "kids": Tango, Jitterbug, Foxy Fluffy Butt, Misty & Cinnamon.
