Where:  Delphi's Lansing Creativity Center

When:  10:00 am - 5:00 pm

Approx. Material Cost: Included

Experience Required: Intermediate and Advanced mosaic experience

Type of Class: Demonstration and hands-on project

Class Description: In this class we will use greyscale values rather than traditional colors to create form and
expression in creating a mosaic pet portrait. Precision cutting techniques will be covered, as
well as andamento, glass selection and shading.
Since this technique is more time consuming, a finished portrait is not expected at the end of the
three-day workshop, however, the eyes and a good portion of the face can be completed,
depending on the experience of each student. This workshop is intended for intermediate or
advanced mosaic artists and should not be used as an introduction to making mosaics.
Students can either work on a black and white photo provided by the instructor, or can provide a
PHOTO prior to the class. Photos provided by the students should be high resolution showing
good detail (not out of focus) and have fairly strong contrast between values.
The instructor will map out the design before the class if using a photo supplied by the student
prior to the class.
A phone with a camera is recommended, as we will be using this as a tool in class to see
grayscale values.
All materials are provided, including a12x12 prepared substrate with photo and drawing, carbon
paper to transfer, stained glass, glue, and the loan of various tools to use during the workshop.
During the workshop, while there is a bit of instruction addressed to the entire class (cutting,
andamento, and discussion of values/tones) I would say that 90% of the class is one-on-one
instruction and assistance with andamento and glass selection. While the portraits won’t be
finished in the three days, the goal is to have the students leave with the confidence to complete
their projects on their own.
An email is sent to students about a month or so prior to the class requesting the photos to be
prepared and providing guidelines for the photographs. A follow up email is sent closer to the
time of the workshop with a tools list for the students to bring. The instructor will have a limited
number of tools available for students to use as well.

Safety: Please wear safety glasses when cutting glass, provided if needed.

Tools & Materials Included: Includes all materials, use of our tools

Additional Tools & Materials: Students may want to bring: Mosaic nippers or tools to work with stained glass.
The instructor will be contacting students regarding photos for their project ans recommending tools.

Pros : Donna is a very patient, kind teacher. She explains and demonstrates her techniques very thoroughly. Although you cannot possibly finish a pet portrait during 3 class periods, Donna makes sure you have the knowledge and supplies to complete your project on your own. Seeing several of Donna's completed works also really helps you understand what you are striving to achieve.
