2010 Annual Photo Contest Winners - Delphi Stained Glass

Congratulations to Our Annual Photo Contest Winners! Every year we are flooded with amazing entries which makes selecting just a few for publication so difficult. Thank you to everyone for participating, for sharing your successes and stories. We can’t wait to see what you make next! Below you’ll find this year’s winning entries.

The Young Adult Program began in Kalamazoo, MI., in October 1977 with only two teachers and a small group of students. Today they have expanded to 7 teachers. Over the years their goal has remained the same, to help young people with d isabilities transitioning into adulthood.

Mark Hubbard, one of the classroom teachers, provides excellent instruction in the classroom and at their off site studio. He not only teaches them how to create quality art but also how to market it. Their studio space, at the Park Trades Center in Kalamazoo, is conveniently located next to the West Michigan Glass Society. Mark uses glass to help challenge many important life skills that are reinforced while working with this medium. The students create truly beautiful pieces and people in the community are amazed with their work. Mark says he sees their attitudes about themselves and others change.

There are still students who visit the school to thank us for our guidance and they often mention the art class as a major part of their rehabilitation. It is all about helping them. You Can Do It! Cathryn Poll from Allegan, MI started creating stained glass with the goal to make a window for her entryway. She made it as her second project, and has been making glass art for her home ever since. Cathryn finds stained glass an enjoyable hobby. Not only does she look forward to working in glass, but she has beautiful art for herself, family and friends when she's done!

Delphi customer Scott Keremes designed this panel using Youghiogheny Glass to replicate the oil paints used in the original painting by Homer Costello.

Delphi customer Arlene Mourier from Tucson, AZ utilized the different characteristics of Wissmach, Bullseye and Uroboros glass to capture the beauty in her project. "I retired from a career with the Railroad after 25 years. As a stained glass hobbyist for over 10 years, I now have all the time I want to devote to creating pieces of stained glass; and believe me I spend many hours in my workshop."

Donald Kotz of San Antonio, TX, designed and created this panel as a retirement gift for the chief of the Monarch Fire Protection District of St. Louis, MO.

Artist Kathy Cox featured the Glassmith Studios Heron bevel cluster in this amazing panel. Use bevels as a focal point or an accent in home décor, windows, doors and more.

Delphi customer Gaynor Bloom from Denver, CO designed a custom fireplace screen using a photograph of their sleeping Samoyed, Cody Coyote.

Karen Good of Arthur, IL has been working with stained glass for about 15 years. She enjoys creating leaded panels and Tiffany style lamps, but admits anything involved with glass attracts her attention. Karen constructed her kitchen backsplash using Bullseye and Youghiogheny glass and added fused glass nuggets to the grapes to make it 3-dimensional.

Artist Chris Thurber from Goodyear, AZ filled his garden trellis with brilliant fused glass flowers, so no matter the season there are always blooms to admire. Create your own bouquets and garden accents with "Fused Glass Flowers" #806140 and molds.

Ring of Fire Artist Challenge entry by Artist: Connie Brown, San Dimas, CA

Artist Judy Phillips of Yuma, AZ created this original design for an art exhibit held in Arizona’s state capital. The design, inspired by the AZ state flag and the grand canyon, incorporates System 96® Iridescent glass and a copper star inclusion to achieve a bold graphical look with stunning painterly effects.

Artist Tammy Gonzales of Fresno, CA started creating beads three years ago and has been loving it ever since. Here she displays a bead made of 104 COE glass with CZ inclusions and floral forms, encased in layers of clear and opaque glass. After annealing the bead she cold worked the outside, grinding and polishing away layers to reveal the hidden core.

Delphi customer Mandy Codd from Gold Coast, Australia incorporates gold embellishments with unique dichroic pieces to make glass cabochons. Mandy creates depth by layering multiple pieces of different dichroic glass, often using four separate firings, totaling almost 28 hours a piece.
