Swap Top 8 Flat Lap Grinder

Swap Top 8" Flat Lap Grinder

Item# 10880
Great Machine!, September 29, 2010 5 stars
Pros
I don't have any other grinders to compare this too but having bought this one I don't see that I'll ever need to try! Easy to assemble and swap laps, and grinds well. You can secure the laps above the protective circle if your piece is wider than the lap.
Cons
Keep water nearby to top up the reservoir - it ticks through faster than you think.
Other Thoughts
Definitely worth it for nice coldworking of edges, does great shaping and finishing.

Hmmm..., March 17, 2010 2 stars
Pros
I got this as I had just bought the fuseworks microwave kiln and thought it be great to have useful tips and projects. It is written quite straightforwardly and reasonably easy to follow.
Cons
There's nothing in this book that I couldn't have figured out for myself or thought of experimenting with. It might be a good basis for some but I got more information from the many good internet sites out there. The whole style of the projects is quite dated and some make you say "why?" because they're just a bit strange.
Other Thoughts
Crank it into the noughties - jazz it up and have some wearable, tasteful projects, not strange, questionable ones.

This kit rocks!!, March 15, 2010 5 stars
Pros
Have got perfect pendants each time, even the first and I've never fused before! I got the extra fusing kit for more glass to supplement and that gives plenty to work with. Don't go at it like a bull at a gate - slow and steady gives great results. Fire for 3 mins as suggested then 30sec increments until fused how you like (1000 watt microwave).
Cons
None yet! I suspect I may outgrow the kiln size but that was the intention when getting the starter kit.
Other Thoughts
The instructions aren't that detailed but I have found a lot of info on the net. One interesting fact I only saw on one site is that fused glass wants to fuse to 1/4" high - meaning if you stack it higher it will flatten out and if you have a flatter stack it will shrink up to 1/4".

Great beginner and beyond kit, March 6, 2010 4 stars
Pros
I had been to a bead making class and got hooked! It was hard to source in NZ so bought from Delphi and service was great. Kit has good range of glass and tools.
Cons
The mandrels are pretty big - I've ordered the 1/16th" ones to replace these - they leave the hole in the bead too wide which you can see on jewelry pieces. Also the sludgey stuff dries out - I've found adding water and stirring well brings it back to life.
Other Thoughts
Like others more detailed instructions would be good - although I ended up checking out heaps of stuff on youtube and that worked great!
