Phoenix Fire Jewelry and Glass's Profile

Bio

I started making stained glass over 20 yrs ago. What I love most is the flexibility to add my own personal and creative design to pieces I make. Some pieces I use a pattern and some are my own original design. A few years ago I discovered and learned the technique of fusing glass in a kiln. It is just as diverse and incorporates my stained glass skills to make unique pieces of art. I hope you enjoy my work as much as I enjoy making it. DICHROIC GLASS: The brilliant dichroic optical properties of dichroic glass are the results of multiple micro-layers of metal oxides. These thin layers of oxides have a total thickness of three to five millionths of an inch. NASA developed dichroic glass for use in satellite mirrors. Multiple ultra-thin layers of different metals (gold, silver, titanium, chromium, aluminum, zirconium, magnesium, silicon) are applied to the surface of the glass in a vacuum chamber. The resulting plate of dichroic glass can then be fused with other glass in multiple firings. Certain wavelengths of light will either pass through or be reflected, causing an array of color to be visible. Due to variations in the firing process, individual results can never be exactly reproduced; each piece of fused dichroic glass is unique and no two pieces are ever the same. FUSED GLASS is a term used to describe glass that has been fired (heat-processed) in a kiln at a range of high temperatures from 593º C (1100ºF)to 816 C (1500 F).
