Bio

I’m Karol Macdonald and when I was seven years old, I graduated from the Philadelphia Museum of Art because I put the correct number of buttons on a drawing of a policeman’s uniform. Even though I could not draw, I could count buttons. Because of this experience, I “decided” I had no artistic ability and steered my life towards a career in business and finance. We don’t get to “decide” about artistic ability – something I learned later in life. Following a passion for glass’s beauty, I took a class in stained glass. It wasn’t for me – the precision required created as much stress as crunching numbers. While taking that class, I was also exposed to the art form of fused (or warm) glass and totally fell in love with the freedom this art form offered. I ordered my first kiln that day. At first, I created jewelry, then moved to include decorative art for the home and office. Both my jewelry and decorative art enjoy an international following, in Canada, England, Scotland, and China, as well as in the United States. I have exhibited in juried shows at the Art Center of Sarasota and The Studio at Gulf and Pine, on Anna Maria Island. In addition to numerous other shows, I most recently participated in the Artist Walk sponsored by the Art Alliance of Sarasota at the University Town Center Mall. I have studied with renowned glass artists and continue to develop new techniques to take my glass creations to new and exciting levels. My art leans to the abstract, probably influenced by my father, abstract artist who worked in oils. Some of my pieces are functional, while others are fun and funky. All my work has a beautiful decorative touch.
