Bio

Niagara Glass Mosaics' artist, Michelle White, creates her unique glass-on-glass mosaics by blending traditional stained glass techniques with ancient mosaic ones. She uses reclaimed vintage wood casement windows, as well as other recycled glass items, such as architectural glass blocks, as the “canvases” for her mosaics. Ideas for mosaics are often sketched out first, then the coloured art glass is selected. Each piece of glass is hand cut. The mosaic image is then laid out and adhered to the “canvas”. Once dried, the mosaic is grouted and sealed. By using a glass-on-glass mosaic technique, Michelle is able to achieve a beautiful transparency of stained glass with the detail and flexibility of a mosaic. The double layer of glass makes the mosaic both strong and stable. Michelle was raised in the picturesque Annapolis Valley, Nova Scotia and has lived in Ontario for the last 14 years . She recently relocated to rural Niagara to begin a sustainable market garden with her husband, along with her work as an artist. She studied biology at Acadia University, as well as fine arts at York and Dalhousie Universities. She has been working in glass for the last 5 years. Michelle sells her work at art shows in the region, as well as internationally on ETSY, and thru her home studio. She welcomes custom work and enjoys collaborating on ideas with clients.
