Location: Kalamazoo, Michigan
A life-long artist, I have deeply explored and worked professionally in several visual media, including graphic design and macro photography, before undertaking the endless possibilities of kiln-formed glass.
While growing up in upstate New York, my family visited the Corning Museum of Glass, where I was instantly intrigued by the art and science of the functional and fine art pieces. Without knowing it, whose visits set the stage for an appreciation of and curiosity about glass that would--after a long, eclectic career in business, consulting, and adult education/training--along with exploring a variety of artistic media--transition into a prolific focus on glass.
Design fundamentals, color principles, and deep appreciation for texture, depth perception, and execution mysteries guide my exploration of glass as a fine art and functional medium.
In late 2010, I began establishing a home studio and continue to add tools and equipment needed to expand my knowledge, skills, and product lines.
Intensives with nationally renowned artists: Gloria Badiner, Michael Dupille, Patty Gray, Nathan Sandberg, Kari Minnick, and Janet Schrader—and many webinars and resources by additional experts--have contributed to a knowledge base from which to explore and create. The generous community these experts, other students in the classes, and glass artists in general, create is inspirational and supportive.
My main focus is functional fine art: pieces that provide a sense of wonder to all who view them and include them in their lives. Imagine using a coaster for your water or wine glass that brings a little joy and wonder every time you pick up the glass! Or, a fruit or serving bowl with so much depth, texture, and color you wonder how it could be created? And, simple-to-dazzling jewelry that attracts viewers with its similar depth and complexity. I include hand-created works in my everyday life (not saving them for 'good’) and hope you will too.
Fritography, the creation of realistic pictures with frit (crushed glass of various sizes), and surface textures, are increasing focuses of my work, as decorative pieces as additional design elements of functional pieces.
