Fusing in a Microwave Kiln

@Lori B. Unfortunately when it comes to firing times in the microwave kiln there is no set schedule. It requires some trial and error. It does sound like the dichroic is burning off which makes me think 6 minutes is too long. Have you tried starting on less time? We often suggest firing for less then slowing adding more time and keeping track of the results for the desired look.

I am trying to fuse dichroic glass in my microwave kiln and it comes out colorless, none of the dichroic colors are visible. What am I doing wrong? I put in microwave for 6 minutes on high, Am I firing it too long?

The Fuseworks Microwave Kiln is available in one size only, but can be purchased separately from the kit as item number 424849. If you have damaged the kiln base or lid and wish to replace the damaged piece only, replacements can special ordered by phone or online - just request item number 424849B for the base, or 424849T for the lid. Unfortunately, a kiln repair cement likely won't allow you to repair the base of a microwave kiln properly. If the damage is minimal, you may be able to simply avoid positioning glass over the divot and continue using the base.

How do you control the annealing time and temperature in a microwave kiln? I am having issues with glass cracking and I am pretty sure it is due to annealing times and temps. What tips do you have to control that? I have an 1100 watt microwave and my Microwave Kiln is 7-1/2 Inch Outside diameter and 5 Inch inside diameter. Any guidance is very helpful.

@borsodi.erika79 At this time we have not conducted any testing of the Glassline Pens in the microwave kiln. The notes provided previously about adjusting the power level and time to experiment and develop a firing schedule for your microwave and kiln are a good suggestion if you wish to try using Glassline in your projects.

@debslou you can certainly use frit in your microwave kiln, though I've yet to try it in mine, but - especially with powder - it would be difficult to fuse it to itself. Try putting the powder on a small piece of glass and you should see better results. If you're still struggling get in touch with our contact center and they'll come to me to help you troubleshoot. I have the fuseworks microwave kiln. I just discovered the frit powder and bought a 96 coe sample pack. Something is definately wrong. Is this not suitable for the microwave kiln? It comes out burned, or disintegrates into dust, when cooled, no matter what length of time I put it on. tried it on just the fiber paper to see what the colors would look like. started at 30 sec. didn"t look right, but went for another 30 sec. and was not looking good at all. Help, I was so excited to be able to add to my little rainy day projects.

@Corissa G. Glassline pens have not been tested in the microwave kiln and so we do not have a recommended firing schedule. Since every microwave is a bit different it's hard to say if it's getting too hot, or not hot enough to cure the paints properly. If you keep a firing log tracking your schedules you can try lowering the temperature and / or shortening the hold time and checking the progress often to see when the paint becomes shiny.
