Pros : Price Good for a small work space for a hobbyist, especially if you don't have plumbing available in your work area.
Cons : Can take a couple of tries to get used to changing the belt and adjusting it properly. Would be nice if the bottom plastic casing was slightly larger which would have made this so much easier. Again, the size out of the bottom of it makes it a bit more difficult to clean out any gunk.
Other Thoughts : Yes, it's noisy but I expected that. I don't find that I get sopping wet which others have commented on. The other couple of wet belt Sanders I've used at other places have got me wetter than this one. I've contacted the company a couple of times with question or to have them send out a number of belts to me in the mail and have been very pleased with their customer service. I've had this for almost 2 years and I've had no problem using it for half an hour or so at a time.

  •   Dont buy.
By on
Pros : Inexpensive
Cons : Bearing is not sealed. Drums are plastic and do not spin accurately. Grit flies up into bearings.
Other Thoughts : This sanders bearings and drums did not work after only 1 month of operation. Had to send it back to CA. for repair. Labor, parts and shipping both ways cost more than the sander! Tech rep from Gryphon said this is a hobby tool only, but he couldn't tell me how often you could use it as a hobby. Disappointed and has cost too much.

  •   disappointed.

Pros : Good price, but you get what you pay for.
Cons : Engine started smoking after 20 minutes of light use, it is very difficult to adjust the top wheel so the belts stay put, and it only takes less than a second for a belt to slide to the left and jam the machine or slide to the right and tear the belt. Once I finally did get it adjusted, it was very difficult to change the belts because of the bottom tray (attached), and I had to spend 40 minutes re-adjusting it every single belt change (with risk of ruining more belts.) The cooling system is also pretty crappy-the sponge often gets sucked up and stuck in the top and you constantly have to re-adjust it.
Other Thoughts : This product might be good for a hobbyist who won't use it very often at all and rarely changes belts, but for anyone who uses it regularly, save yourself time and money and just buy a higher quality one from the start.

  •   Wet Belt Sander
By on
Pros : This sander really does the job. I love it! the belt are easy to change and it works perfectly every time.
Cons : It throws out a lot of water as all glass tools do. There is no good way to drain out the water in the reservoir
Other Thoughts : If mine breaks I will buy this one again.

  •   PERFECT
By on
Pros : works well out of the box, belts are easy to get from Delphi or Griffin and easy to change, makes very quick work of grinding and beveling, price is right, not to heavy to move around tilts easily and stays wet
Cons : the metal shelf does rust so I will dry it off and cover it with duct tape, does spray water but what wet grinder or tool doesn't
Other Thoughts : this does what I want it do at a good price and very quickly

  •   U get what U pay 4

Pros : I find it to be a very good choice for the money. Sure there are bigger and more powerful tools available but they are about twice the cost.
Cons : It is kind of loud.
Other Thoughts : Perhaps a water delivery system such as is used with the disk grinder could be employed. A slow drippier or a controlled spray to keep the belt consistently wet would really be an improvement over the sponge. But the sponge does a good job of keeping the belt just wet enough, with a minimum of over spray. I don't expect this benchtop tool to have the capacity of the much larger and more expensive models. It was not meant to serve the same demands.

  •   Love this machine
By on
Pros : Easy to use and clean - polishes beautifully - I have never had a problem with it in the 4 years I have had it
Cons : a bit messy - wear old clothes or an apron
Other Thoughts : My daughter will not use the saws but she will sit and polish with this for hours

  •   Poorly Designed
By on
Pros : None.
Cons : *Unfinished steel with water?! *Near impossible to adjust the drum angle properly. Belts WILL slip off, jam, and break. *Belts are expensive and break quickly. *You will get wet, so will your surface, and floor, and nearby walls, and other equipment...
Other Thoughts : I thought I could use this for a simple repetitive job. It was just not worth it. Spend the money on a professional tool.

  •   gryphon wet belt sander
By on
Pros : none
Cons : belts are hard to adjust, slip off and jam into safety cover, or go the other way and roll on to themselves
Other Thoughts : threw it away, waste of money.ordered the better product which I wish I had from the start, just didn't need to do much but give a fire-polish on small item & this looked like it would be easy to use and would do the small jobs I needed, but too hard to perfectly adjust belts lots of wasted time

  •   Sort of get what you pay for
By on
Pros : If you're expecting a commercial grade tool, this isn't it. I use this in a commercial glass studio A LOT. Belts do slip (especially cork) and water cooling system needs improvement. Not feeling like I'm going to have a long term relationship with this equipment as I will wear it out with regular use. Great for the occasional hobbyist. If you value your hearing you will be REQUIRED to use earplugs or earmuff type hearing protection. Must wear safety glasses (have a belt snap and you'll be glad you did). Would be better with more grit choices for belts. Overall, I've accomplished what I've needed to do with it but wait for the day when I can purchase a larger, more powerful, even running machine. Definitely more time efficient if you finish multiple projects at a time. I like the upright working area rather than a lap grinder horizontal surface.
Cons : Not enough horsepower, poor water/cooling system. Motor bogs down regularly. You will get WET using this equipment and so will the area around this tool. Needs a better written user guide to explain what you want to accomplish with each belt.
Other Thoughts : Wish they'd make one just larger and more powerful in a mid-price range. People need to understand that this is a process - if you don't work ALL the belts and do so long enough at each step, you will not get close to the results you are hoping for. To do it well, this is a time consuming process but with patience and really watching your work through each step, you can get some good results. Don't expect to zip through the grits to perfection!

  •   very handy

Pros : I quite like the machine. Wearing an plastic apron is a good idea. Great for polishing the fused edges
Cons : I don't like the seam in the belt because i am afraid it might fracture the glass while finishing the edges
Other Thoughts : please find seamless belts

  •   Stay Away.
By on
Pros : It's affordable.
Cons : It's loud. I get totally wet when I use it. The shelf doesn't stay in place. It's an overall bad design. I've stopped using mine all together.
Other Thoughts : Save up your money for a lap grinder. Don't buy this junky machine.

  •   Some Major Design Flaws
By on
Pros : It gets the job done. I needed a sander and didn't want to deplete all my savings on a lap grinder or a larger professional machine. This can do large, small, whatever you are looking to do.
Cons : It is extremely loud for one. Earplugs are a must. The belts are constantly falling off the side and jamming into the plastic, smell terrible and the belt gets ripped up each time. It doesn't fit any other belts but GRYPHON belts. The belt is never consistently wet and I am not sure what that sponge at the bottom is actually supposed to do. It certainly does not keep the belt welt all across or with any consistency. I find myself overfilling and getting soaked while using this machine. I wear a bandana over my hair, my safety goggles, and a printmakers apron so I don't get soaked. Otherwise it runs dry. Not good for breathing in airborne glass particles first of all and gets the glass hot-that's a no no! Overfilling is way better than running it with a dry belt. The belts wear out quickly but they are not diamond so that is a given.
Other Thoughts : I have found that I have problems with my ring saw too. They are just made junky on this level. It is a shame, because you pay a lot (relatively) for what you get but it is necessary. I don't have the money to buy a huge professional sander at this point. But the companies know that if you want to make a quality, professional product on a hobbyist level, you need to buy these things. So I would say to get it if you are a hobbyist, but be prepared for the faults. You won't be beaming about your purchase. Undoubtedly you will dislike cold working as much as I do after listening to this thing drone on while you are using it, after you have adjusted the belt several times because it went flying off to the side. One thing I will say that is very positive about Gryphon is that their customer service is great.

  •   Gryphon Sander
By on
Pros : I like the grit choices and use them all. I also think this machine would work well for larger items.
Cons : I don't mean to be a complainer, but see things that might be improved... Would like to see the shelf be more perfectly and steadily placed. I do small glass, and when the belts change as to grits, it seems that the shelf shifts a little in adjustment, and some of the previously sanded glass is not all "hit" uniformly. Also it is very hard to bevel very small things as when the shelf is moved to bevel, it moves away from the belt, and the gap is so large that the pieces either fall into the hole or are very hard to hold evenly---I clamped on another plate to stay closer to the belt. And the sponge is hard to adjust, and sometimes in trying to get the belt uniformly wet, the sponge slips and rides up with the belt and lodges at the top of the machine...not fun ! Hard to adjust the water also as it seems there is either too little and parts of the belts stay dry, or a flood from the top---am going to look into routing a line for a steady and even water source.
Other Thoughts : Would like to see the manufacturer have uniform markings to set the plate so that bevels could be uniformly replicated when the belts are changed.

Pros : I like the speed and the ability to grind glass. The larger surface makes grinding quick.
Cons : The belts do not stay on very easily. They tend to slide off to the left. Would be better if the cover at the top was metal on all sides.
