What is Hot Glass?
Hot glass, or "Fusing" is the process of heating glass to extreme temperatures until glass melts (fuses) together
Fusing glass in a kiln is a fascinating technique that enables artists and crafters to create unique and gorgeous projects. Fusing is a process, just like stained glass or mosaics, and once you know all the terms and tools, the creating is fun and the results are amazing!
Levels of Fusing
- Tack Fusing: Fusing two or more layers together while keeping sharp edges.
- Medium Fuse: Glass is partially melted and edges are rounded.
- Full Fuse: Pieces are melted into one single unit. Surface has no texture.
- Slumping: The process of shaping glass using a mold, heat and gravity.

| Hot Glass Quick Steps |
| 1. |
One way to work in hot glass is to use a mold to slump the glass, as we did to create this
plate. Fused glass plates are excellent beginner projects. Decorate a clear plate disk with frits, confetti
and stringers to achieve the pattern and colors of your choice. Terminology: Frits (crushed glass), Confetti
(thin chips of glass), Stringers (thin rods of glass).

| 2. |
1st Firing: The decorated disk is then fused by firing it in a kiln to approximately 1400 degrees.
|
| 3. |
2nd Firing: The fused disk is slumped in a plate mold to achieve a plate shape. The disk is placed on a mold and fired again to approximately 1200 degrees. |
