Square Knob Casting Mold

Square Knob Casting Mold

Item# 806166
Love the ability to customize, September 30, 2022 5 stars
Pros
Want to match just the right color? Want to just have fun? I used glow powder and various frits to make a set of galaxy knobs for my daughter's dresser and it worked perfectly with her room's decor. The bubbles even fit in as stars....
Cons
No weights given for filling, just "mound up the top" which you have to go OVER the top of the mold, or risk not being able to fit in and cover the hardware. Not what I was expecting... and these end up a bit heavy.
Other Thoughts
These get built up backwards from other frit projects since the bottom of the mold is the stem rather than the textured front. This can be a boon to those not used to typical casting, but makes it a bit messier to plan as things melt unevenly. Also, be sure to use a good glue to adhere the hardware (it's going to be twisted a good bit!) and be aware that if you use all clear, you'll see the hardware through the knob.

perfect fo use with the knob molds, September 30, 2022 5 stars
Pros
Following the instructions for the round or square knob molds these work perfectly. Screws fit tightly.
Cons
No instructions, tips, or tricks shipped with the item itself. I had to use the knob project sheet to get any info and hope these matched what was mentioned.
Other Thoughts
I tried using E6000 with these and that was still too loosy goosy, I had to switch to a resin epoxy to glue them in, and that was messy... not to mention hard to keep them centered just right, but if you put in the screws to hold the barrels in place, be very careful to keep the threads 100% clear & clean since I lost one to a thread of epoxy drifting into the wrong spot.

good concept, poor execution, May 11, 2022 3 stars
Pros
very solid and each one is very heavy. It has a pro finish look, you could even apply cabochons to the covers
Cons
The slot is SO wide you have to have a high degree of curvature or quad thick glass to be able to actually secure it, the adjustable screw adjusts about 1 mm so it's use is negligable. First installation is not straight forward, there are no directions or instructions and you can't tighten the screw holding the device to the wall once the art work is in it, so getting the art in place is a magic trick. And it will never be secure. There's no rating to know how much it can hold, and honestly, they are heavy enough in their own right there is no using brads- it requires studs. Then once you install one and put on the cover, there's no changing it, EVER. The cover is counter sunk and applied with adhesive so removing it to change or even release the artwork it's holding is difficult and not always safe. On top of that, you'll have trouble getting the cover back on if you are trying to leave them in place to change or even just thoroughly clean the art work.
Other Thoughts
They are sold individually, which is nice if you say only want 3, but 1 is NOT enough to hold a piece, so make sure you order enough, and realize that hanging your art work will cost at least double, and probably 4 times the price listed.

very un-even mix, May 11, 2022 2 stars
Pros
The only way to get the holly or tree designs, which are cute. They are made in the US.
Cons
I was hoping for a near even mix of the different types, but 1/3rd was "presents" (the red blob on the green back ground). I got four of the striped mint look, and half a dozen of the snowflake. 10 of each of the others, and nearly 30 presents. Worst part is I can't even use the mints on the corners of say a candy dish, because they vary from less than 4 mm to more than 7mm, (ot to mention thickness variations....) and while I expect SOME variance, twice as big is too much.
Other Thoughts
The biggest problem with murrine is that you need a LOT of them to make good use of them, and they are far from cheap. I avoided giving this just one star because I'm sure some one could make good use of these as they're packaged, but I was disappointed that I couldn't use them to ring the edge of a candy dish as I'd intended without ordering several more bags and having to discard more than half as unsuitable.

WOrks wonderfully and easy to use, May 11, 2022 5 stars
Pros
I love the non-aerosol version, it feels like I'm wasting less, getting better coverage, have more control over where it goes and it's easier to ship. Just like regular ZYP it cleans up easy, saves my molds, doesn't leave brush marks like kiln wash and even when I'm casting thick pieces for a long time frame it never breaks down and gets stuck in the final project.
Cons
I always prep large batches of molds to use at a time because the spray nozzle has to be fully cleaned and removed from the bottle when not in use to keep from clogging. And it takes time and wastes a bit to clean it but it's not much worse than having to prep kiln wash every time either.
Other Thoughts
I've been told that once you use boron nitride on a mold you can never go back to kiln wash because it won't stick any more, so I was hesitant to try it. ZYP is way more expensive than kiln wash! but after I had several molds damaged due to imperfect kiln wash coverage and staying power I realized, it costs way more to replace a mold than the extra BN costs to do a great job. Since I've switched I haven't lost a mold yet.

secure, May 24, 2021 5 stars
Pros
The screw is secure and safe, I have a 4.5"x3.5" double thick fused project on mine with no fear of it falling off like clips always give me. The bases themselves have a piece that comes out to press flat against the back of the glass to help provide support and keep the shade from turning if bumped. The on/offrocker is convenient and marked and the white base is a true white, not grey or almond looking.
Cons
It takes incandescent type bulbs so it sticks out a bit far from the wall, not an issue with mine, but I suppose it could be for some folks
Other Thoughts
I love night lights, they're the perfect way to show off both the lit and unlit versions of things!
North Star Casting Mold with Hole

North Star Casting Mold with Hole

Item# 92422
unimpressed, May 24, 2021 3 stars
Pros
the idea is nice, but the design didn't turn out at all like I was expecting/ hoping
Cons
It didn't come with a heat resistant metal pin to wrap to insert into the hole, I was able to use one from another mold I purchased, but this type really needs that pin to start things off the best and it's a shame that wasn't included. The design is supposed to look like cut crystal, but the edges are too soft and unformed to hold up that look. Trying to enhance the inside edges with a dremel 1. defeats the purpose of nice and easy and 2. is mostly lost when it's fire polished. Honesly, it's not one of the better casting molds I've used, The mold surface was fairly uneven and the result I got would have needed way too much polishing to look nice.
Other Thoughts
I'v had better luck with cutting shapes out of fiber paper, setting a larger piece of sheet glass over the top of it, and just full fusing. The result from this mold would take so much time polishing and finishing that it seems like more trouble than it's worth, maybe for dicro frit it might be worth it, but plan on putting in the elbow grease.

economical, May 24, 2021 4 stars
Pros
The nice thing about dicro slide is that un-like etching or removing dicro coating from glass to make shapes stand out, there is no dicro wasted. I've regularly used shaped punches (like hole punches) to make fun shapes or patterns and then used the left over bits from around the punched out shapes to make confetti Some of the negative space shapes are more fun than the punched ones ;) Best part is being able to combine multi colors of dicro in one project. Other Bonuses: It's easier to carry with me between home and shop, I can put it on any color glass I want (on white frequently works well)
Cons
The dicro can sometimes come off the film, I've had it both left on the paper, and come off in the water. If the slide is older or even stored imperfectly, this is much more common. Some colors are more sensitive to over-firing/re-firing than others and while some colors are just as brilliant as regular coated glass dicro, others seem to be less intense, and more see thru. Slide often doesn't work well capped to start with, so I've tried tack firing it on, then capping to do my full fuse but sometimes the image distorts doing that.
Other Thoughts
I wish the squares were longer, I get they use small samples so you can see the color, but I like using it as edging, and this makes for more cutting and piecing.

Glows for hours, December 3, 2017 5 stars
Pros
This isn't the weak glow like you find in cheap plastic stars, I could READ by the light of the vial I put this in to carry it with it charging up just sitting on top of my workspace. Also, very much a bluish aqua color, not the green you get with those.
Cons
It comes in a small plastic zipper baggie, that will gladly leak if you don't put it in a more durable container. It doesn't fuse in and of itself, very much an inclusion, and when put in the bottom of a mold (mixed with clear powder as per instructions) it did leave a rough texture.
Other Thoughts
Be careful how you use it, a little goes a LONG way. Also it's not clear itself, and behind "white" opal glass it couldn't get enough light to glow much so too thick will waste it, and on the back of a super thick piece you'll loose some utility. But I used this in light switch cover, and it worked great. Used it with some paperweights, worked great.

very versitile, December 3, 2017 5 stars
Pros
Uniform, plenty of length. Just the right width for soda bottles. The neck of the center bottle fits perfectly in my hand (thumb on top, think artist's palette) to act as a handle, if it weren't so heavy it'd be a great cocktail plate.
Cons
the way to get them to stick together, requires that they be pushed up into bottle shoulder area, so the end tends to slump low enough that it doesn't really hold anything in on that end... which can mean snacks spilling out on your table.
Other Thoughts
I was worried this wouldn't work in terms of bottles with different COE sticking to each other, so I've been sticking to one brand of soda per holder, and it's been great. They over lap just enough to form a good bond. I've even been able to use this for single bottles on their own. Keep meaning to try just 2 next to each other, but haven't had a good chance.
