Room With A View

My son and daughter-in-law had an old window that was removed during remodling of their first home. They wanted something done that they could cherish from their first home and hang on a wall as an art piece.

A watercolor of a tree gave me the idea and I drew up a design from that thought. I had to remove the old glass and make each pane individually to replace in each square.  The design had to be drawn so that the space between the panes was taken into account to make it visualy work as well.

Since many of the pieces are small and each square is only about 9"x9" I could do this with foil. It took months to find the right colors that I had in my head, and I worked the piece from bottom to top and just 'winged' it as I went.  I started out by using a friends ring saw to cut the pieces, but found it too tedious and just hand cut the rest. Because I only do glass as a hobby and only get about once a week at a class to work, it took me about a year to complete.

The piece is actually hung upside down from the way the window would actually be used. That made the top of the window stick out further than the bottom giving the effect of the tree branches coming forward.  All of the glass is opaque as there is no light source behind it, just a white tall.
