Artist Statement

The Waka Huia, or feather box, is a canoe-shaped container used for holding sacred objects and valued treasures. In this piece, a cast glass ring is the vessel (waka) for a glass representation of the sacred Pohutukawa flower. The blooming of the Pohutukawa tree at Christmas is personally significant. It represents a homecoming – the end of my journey.
