Recycled Glass Sign

     This glass sign is made from old window glass and an old aqua colored candle volve or two that I had gotten at Salvation Army.  The color on the sea weed is powdered enamel.

     My Best Friend bought me a hugh kiln when the local glass shop closed and told me I had no more excuses for not creating art.  She runs the local museam's Gift Shop and needed some permanent signage for the different sections of the store.  She thought recycled glass would be a great medium and left the details to me!  -- I had never taken any fused glass classes!!!!   Besides having a HUGE interest in the medium, I vertually knew nothing.  I knew a minute amount of info from talking to glass gurus, but not enough to just go out and do it!  So I got on the internet and found out that there wasn't a ton of info about using recycled glass.  Mostly that it was difficult, so that's why people used a set COE.   

     Lots of experimenting and a couple of blender blades later, I had figured out how to grind the glass small enough to make the letters out of, using bottles, volves, vases, etc., whatever had a nice color to it.  The letters are then glued to the panel.  The panels are made from our neighbors old windows that they replaced.  Cut and fused together.  I was happy with the results of the enamel.  I really didn't want to add color with paint.  I ended up using Armor Etch on the back of the pieces, to make the panels less see through, it makes the sign more effective.  I didn't use etching on the letters, the ones for this sign just came out this way!  Another nice surprise when I opened the kiln!  It makes them look like sea glass!

     I have since purchased a Zephyr Ring Saw, it will sure make life easier when I make/finish a few more signs in the future.
