Labyrinth Platter

Description:

Labyrinths are complex patterns, often confused with mazes, which are walked as a prayer or meditation practice. Benefits include improved focus, stress reduction, and lowered blood pressure. Labyrinths have been used worldwide for 3500 years or more. A labyrinth is a single path or unicursal tool for personal, psychological and spiritual transformation. Labyrinths are thought to enhance right brain activity. If you would like to 'walk' the finger labyrinth, while not required, it is recommended that you trace the path with your non-dominant hand (the hand opposite the one you write with).

Over the past fifteen years labyrinths have enjoyed a dramatic revival as a meditation, relaxation and spiritual tool. Beginning in churches in the United States, this revival now encompasses religious communities of all types, as well as hospitals and health care facilities, spas and retreat centers, schools and universities, public parks, memorials and healing gardens, prisons and even progressive businesses. Labyrinths have been built in such varied settings as Battery Park in New York City, Johns Hopkins Medical Center in Baltimore and a downtown square in Zurich, Switzerland.

I hand built this platter after stamping the hand carved design into the clay. It was then fired and painted with an antique pewter glaze into the grooves and a multi-colored turquoise glaze in between the spaces. The back is painted in a foliage green glaze. Fired twice it is durable and beautiful at the same time.
