Aging in America

 This 5 panel project was built for a large public installation dealing with Civil Rights in America.  My panel deals with rights for aging Americans and I chose to show how our elder population can stay involved in society, enjoying themselves, staying healthy and giving back to society by continuing to participate. Examples in my piece include reading to children, walking in the park and participating inTai Chi near a the Senior Center.

References with importance to aging can be found on the tree branches and the book cover including ADEA, Medicare, Social Security Act and AARP. The tree trunk has insets of  FDR, Truman, LBJ and ARRP founder Ethel Andrus who were all important to these civil rights. I used fall colors for the leaves to represent the maturing cycle of life.  

While each panel is approximately 5 feet wide, the overall height of the project totals 15 feet.

This is an original piece that I designed and built using a large variety of glass including Spectrum, Bullseye, Kokomo, Wissmach, Armstrong, and a few finds of Youghiogheny and Chicago Art glass. The lettering is fused. The project is done using copper foil with strong line for support.   Special use permits have been obtained for those inclusions not in public domain
