On The First Day...

"On The First Day..." is a pear shaped sculpture, 30 in tall, and 60 in in circumference, made from polystyrene foam, fiberglass mesh, custom cement mixes, and applied glass tile and gold smalti mosaic.  It is a commissioned piece for The Carolina Inn's 12 Days of Xmas display for 2008, inspired by the "partridge in a pear tree" lyric and the southern charm of the hotel.  It took six weeks, working many hours each day to complete.  Using a wide variety of colors in the same family, as well as iridescent glass tile really makes the bird and pear leaves lively, and the gold smalti for the lettering on the red banner adds a classic holiday feel.  Photo by Chris Ferrer.
