1889 South Dakota

The piece was created to celebrate the anniversary of South Dakota's statehood. It incorporates symbols representing things that were important parts of SD history such as the railroad, gold mining, homesteaders, Native Americans and the Black Hills. A buffalo skull is the base of the piece because the state's land originally belonged to the buffalo.

The sculpture was made by cutting small pieces of glass, heating them in a kiln to form nuggets and adhering them to a buffalo skull that was primed and painted.
