Lava Love

Lava Love is hand made from granite, glass rods, beads and smalti glass. First I hand cut each granite piece to the size I needed to create this design. I started with large granite chunks about two feet wide then broke them down to smaller pieces using a hammer. ( great stress reliever;) Then to make them 1/2 inch to 1/4 inch in size, I used the hammer and hardie method to make them the size and shape I needed.  The next step was to glue the grantie down on mesh that was laid over the sketch for the design, between sections the red glass rods, pink bead and orange smalti was placed in between granite. Once all the pieces were together I carefully transferred it to wedi board that a 1/4 in. thick thinset bed was already on and pressed down to inbed the stone and glass in thinset to make a strong hold. Some granite pieces have a polish side to them creating a shine that adds to the design.
