Dancing Flames Hanukah Menorah

The inspiration for this work is the interplay of time of day, light source, and background on glass, particularly when dichroic glass is a feature of the work. This functional object of art is called a Hanukah Menorah, and is used in celebrating the 8 day long Jewish holiday of Hanukah.  Hanukah is also known as “The Festival of Lights,” and usually takes place in December.  Of particular importance is the lighting of 8 candles fitted into candle cups on the menorah. Blessings are recited as one additional candle is lit each night using a “helping candle,” the ninth, that sits slightly above the 8 others. On the 8th day, all candles are finally lit, making a magnificent display, with the reflection of flickering candlelight against translucent, opaque, and multifaceted dichroic glass. Its beauty is a joy to behold! 

This particular menorah uses a band of opaque cream colored glass and translucent spring green glass as an additional "window" of light enhancing interest and the balance of light.

Design and construction of the menorah is a multi-step process including envisioning the play of light and light sources, multiple firings in the kiln, extensive cold working prior to each firing, and the precise fitting and epoxying of the various components.
