Betsy Ross Flag

The flag is 4” long, 3” high with a light blue glass square field containing 13 clear water medium frit shards for stars. The red stripes are red opal medium frit interspersed with clear water medium frit white stripes.  The blue field and red and white stripes are placed on a clear glass under sheet and fired in the kiln using a tacking firing schedule.  I chose the Betsy Ross flag for a simple novice reason - less stars to count out and place.  Though a simple project, it provides the essence of working with glass. At its core, glass is a way to capture and display light. But it also provides a physical context for that display.  So here we have light presented in blue, red and white aspects but formed into a physical piece called a flag.  As a novice working with glass, it has been exciting to begin to understand this subtle relationship between the visual and physical qualities of the pieces that I have been making. I look forward to learning more and being able to improve on my skills and art.
