Engraving of a Japanese Stencil

This is the reverse engraving of plate 45 from the old book „The manipulation of the brush as applied to design: a course of brushwork for elementary and secondary schools“, published in 1902 in an 8 by 10 frame. Beneath the illustration, it is noted that this is taken from a Japanese stencil plate. The birds were a very common motif in ancient Japan, especially on designs for katagami (Japanese paper stencil) technique of decorating fabric or in brush painting.
