Dragon and Warrior

This piece is based on an illustration by J.R.R.Tolkien that was created in May of 1928. You can see the same dragon without the warrior on Tolkien's map of the Lonely Mountain published in The Hobbit. I saw the illustration in Pictures by J.R.R. Tolkien, Harper Collins 1992. I saved the image from a website, resized it and drew my pattern on top of the blown up image. This is my interpretation of Tolkien's work and it is destined for the space over my mantle, a little fan art for my personal enjoyment, not for sale. The panel is 35" wide and 11 1/2" tall. The dragon's claws and legs protrude out from the panel. The ears, the center spike of the tail are also raised. I made 2 teeth that stick up from the jaw. I raised the edge of the warrior's shield so I could make a 3-D spear. I found a plastic diamond and wired and glued it to the end of the spear for more interest. The water glass background and Celtic knot hangers are from Delphi.
