Cranes are quintessentially elegant and inspiring creatures that never fail to inspire awe in me. Renowned as “Birds of Happiness” and believed to live for a thousand years (in folklore at least), cranes are a study in exquisite beauty.
In 1942, the global population of Whooping Cranes was only 22, divided between only two flocks. The decline of their population was due almost entirely to loss of habitat and hunting.
One of the flocks died out a few years later, leaving only a core flock of 16 birds.
Thanks to biologists at the USGS, there are now 75 Whooping cranes in the US (there are no Whooping Cranes in other countries). All captive bred cranes are released into the wild, split between two flocks; a migratory and a non-migratory flock.
