I have been interested in ‘negative’ space. When I fused strips of 3mm glass placed together, negative space appears due to the nature of glass fusing into itself to be 6mm. This fascinated me. For Within I cut 3mm strips of purple, black, and iridescent deep purple sheet glass. Placed black frit and deep purple stringers across the strips to strengthen the strips and full fused together. This caused organic negative spaces.
The piece was slump fired onto a large wave steel mold. I cut the piece into 2 pieces after slumping. The base is fused layered glass block with 2 channels (using fiber sheets) using clear, purple, and iridescent purple sheet glass. The 2 molded striped pieces are placed into the channels of the base.
