Hay Stack Rock on the Oregon Coast near Cannon Beach is a popular attraction. When the tide is in, it is completely surrounded by the ocean. Regular Pacific storms create vibrant and dramatic images of nature at it's best.
This piece captures a storm at two different times, mid-day and evening sunset. It consists of only three primary pieces of glass with the top piece a single sheet of glass with the rock cut in. When back ligh level is low the image is a mid-day storm. The sky and ocean are from one sheet of glass. As the backlight level increases in the late afternoon and at sunset the clouds briten and the rock's shadow appears in the surf below. Cloud colors change as the mottled white glass starts to show through.
The third image is the back side showing how the shadow effect is achieved using the cutout section of blue glass to create the shadow effect.
