My wife and I recently took a fusing class from Val and are really enjoying ourselves! This is my second fused glass "Draped" bowl. The first bowl was beautiful, but didn't turn out exactly as I had planned. It didn't drape far enough and there wasn't very much separation between the glass pieces. For this bowl, I reduced the width of the glass pieces, cut the colored glass squares shorter and spaced them farther apart. I started this project by cutting 3/8" wide strips of clear Bullseye glass, along with many small squares of colored transparent Bullseye glass. I modified the design as I wanted the sides of the bowl to stretch out into various sized holes, to finish with a lattice look design. After cutting all the glass and laying it out, I tack fused it together. I then draped the glass panel over a 9" stainless steel cooking bowl, treated with ZYP spray. I heated the kiln up to 1,300 degrees F to get it to stretch all the way down to the rim of the bowl and shelf. I started to "Peek" at the progress of the drape at around 1,250 degrees F (in 10 degree increments) until I felt the glass had draped enough and then let it soak for 10 minutes. After patiently waiting for the kiln to cool down, I opened my Hot Shot 16G kiln and was pleasantly surprised! The bowl turned out even better than I could have imagined!
We appreciate all the help Val & Roy have given us with our new hobby and plan on making many more projects!
Sincerely,
Dan
