Heart of the Platte

This fused glass mosaic crane is over 6 feet tall and part of a public art project in Kearney, Nebraska.  The Dawn Rotary Club sponsors Cranes on Parade II as a method to raise funds for numerous local and international charities.  The original Cranes on Parade was created in 2003.  Heart of the Platte, along with 15 other crane designs by local artists, was auctioned at the Museum of Nebraska of Art on September 9, 2010.  My contribution is the mosaic interpretation of the Sandhill Crane.  The tiles are hand cut and fired in my Paragon kiln.  There are over 11,000 individual tiles.  Frit was used to color the crown, eyes, and feet of the crane.  The sculpture itself was designed by another artist and was poured by a firm that does these type of fiberglass projects.
