13.5" Stained Glass Mosaic Tile Flowerpot with Boston Terrier and Lots of Festive Flowers

This was my first mosaic flower pot. I had a design in mind and I figured the artwork would be straight forward and fairly easy to create. Because of the low level of difficulty, I thought I could complete it in a relatively short amount of time. All of my assumptions were so far off. Because of the vertical nature of the pot and its inherent curvature, this turned out to be the most difficult mosaic I have ever done. If I stood the planter up, the tiles would fall off. If I put it on its side, it would roll. I realized if I filled a large box with styrofoam peanuts, I should be able to lay the pot on its side and glue the tiles without it rolling. It worked quite well, but because it was so high on my tabletop, I had to stand. Could be worse.

When I finished the tiling, I painted the top rim with a beautiful metallic green paint. Before grouting it, I put blue painter's tape where the tiles end and the paint begins so as not to get grout on the painted surface. When the grout dried, I slowly peeled off the blue tape and to my surprise, off came the paint! Disappointed, I came up with a few options and tested them out. Although the metallic paint was gorgeous, it was very prone to nicks and scratches and grudgingly, I had to give it up. I chose a festive bright green acrylic paint that was more durable. I wanted this pot to be able to withstand the elements, so I applied 2 coats of a heavy duty sealer. In addition, I used a thick, high-gloss, protective finish on the painted areas.

The mosaic flowerpot took almost 2 months to complete and I'm happy with the results. What a learning experience this has been!
