Description:

DD-Pop (Depth+Dimension-PopArt) is a 3-dimensional interpretation of one of Roy Lichtenstein 2-dimensional early works of art.  It consists of two separate pieces (each approximately 12''X6") that are displyaed with a break between them to add another layer of dimensionality to the overall work as the design continues from one piece to the next.  In this project I wanted to explore multiple dimensions using only black, white and clear glass.  I first fused 4 layers of glass together--black+clear+white+black.  The first layer of dimensionality was created by creating both negative and positive space using a kiln carving technique that produced a sculptured effect.  I created contrasting smooth and rough surfaces by using different shapes and textures of ceramic fiber paper.  Then in order to add more depth and dimensionality, I spent several hours grinding various raised areas of the glass to eliminate the top layer of black glass in order to expose either just the white glass (closer to the surface) or both the white and clear glass.  In the most heavily ground areas, the exposure of the clear glass gives even more depth as it exposes an optic view into the bottom layer of black.  I beveled the edges to expose all 4 layers of contrasting dark and light.  This also provides a pathway for light to travel from the outside edges to the inner sections that are ground down to the clear glass.  All of these elements display various forms of depth and dimension, darkness and light, rough and smooth, black and white.
