Edmonia Lewis mosaic portrait

0 loves

This mosaic is made of stained glass, with some words and images under glass to tell snippets of the story of the woman featured, Edmonia Lewis. She was a sculptor in the late 1800s, born in New York of Ojibway and Haitian parents. She began showing her work in Boston and Chicago, but moved to Rome and spent most of her life in Europe. Her work was sometimes controversial, but was well-known and highly regarded. However, as a woman of color, she has been left out of art history. *Permanent collection of City of Seattle Office of Art & Culture
