This platter was made using Wardell Publications' Binasphere Cast & Slump mold, which is two-sided and allows you to cast a footed bowl on one side, or a footed platter on the opposite side. A foot is cast in the first firing. In the second firing, the foot remains in the mold, while a single round disc or a separately created disc (in this case, a 6 mm pre-fused "puddle" disc) slumps down to meet and fuse with the foot. The result is a lovely raised platter.
What started all this was my curiosity about making "puddles", those colorful and variegated blobs of glass that I had seen people make in you-tube videos. Well, I just had to try it myself, and was pleasantly surprised by how many beautiful shapely and colorful puddles I ended up with. So then I had to come up with a way of incorporating them into a project. The mold had been sitting for a while waiting to be tried out, so let's make a platter!
The puddles somewhat resembled river rocks to me, so I created a sort of river pattern with them, and worked the rest of the design around them. Since I had so many "leftover" puddles, I have since made a small candy dish in a slightly different design but using all the same colors, and will probably make a couple more serving dishes of varying sizes and shapes to accompany this collection.
