“Brooklyn Dive Bar at Night” was inspired one night just as I walked up the street towards a neighborhood bar. The outdoor dining area was a glow with strings of lights, while the glow of the neon beer signs reflected from the sidewalks. The inside also warmly glowed in the night. The bar has won best NYC Jukebox several times and decided to make it the focal point of the piece. This is my attempt to capture the luminosity and energy of the moment. Also, I love that the owner used to electrical tape to partially mask the words “Budweiser” on the sign and change it into “dive.”

I was able to create the sense of the light fixtures above the bar and some of the windows being illuminated by gluing gold foil beneath the glass. The gems glisten as the string of lights around the outdoor patio. The neon lights were painted on the reverse side of the glass to stand out from the inside of the bar that was painted on the wooden base. The graffiti was painted of the wooden substrate and covered with translucent green glass. Some of the graffiti is painted on the surface of the glass. Most of the sidewalk is translucent purple glass with various colors painted beneath to capture the shadows and reflections of the neon light. If the light hits the mosaic just right the lights appear to be illuminated. The gold frame I found on the street. It is a little beaten up, just like the bar. 23”x 29” 2025
