Frozen

This 10" high, 10" wide hankerchief vase was made with 4 sheets of Spectrum 96 with one sheet of Austin Thin Films (dichro magic) dichroic glass sandwiched between the 4 sheets.  The 5 layer stack of glass was fired in a Skutt Clamshell kiln with 1/8 inch ceramic fiber separting the glass from the ceramic damming material.  It was fired very, very slowly.  After firing, the edges of the heavy slab of glass were ground on a Glastar 12" horizontal lap grinder first using the coarsest disc, followed by progressively finer disks.  The polished slab was slumped in a Paragon Janus 27 kiln.  A stainless steel bowl was the base and it was covered with a 1" fiber blanket circle with the edges cut and shaped the way I wanted the glass to flow.  On top of the fiber blanket I placed a piece of fiber board to make sure the vase would sit flat.  I then covered the structure with thin fire ceramic paper, placed the slab on top and slumped using a very, very conservative schedule.  Crossing my fingers, it worked, and sold.
