Anna's Hummingbird

Hummingbirds, fast iridescent colourful flying gems, have fascinated me for years. I made this little portrait of a resting Anna's hummingbird all in COE 96 glass and powders, challenging myself to get as much detail into the picture as I can while working on a small scale piece and going with just one firing of the artwork. This miniature bird portrait goes hand in hand with the small size of its subject, a real hummingbird, the glass background is just 2 3/4" wide and 3 1/2" high. I get to enjoy hummingbirds visiting the area where I live just for a very limited time each year so I treasure every moment I can observe them dancing in the air around a feeder or "taking a breath" after their acrobatic show enjoying a perch on my clothes lines.
