  •   wishing for molds
By on
Pros : I love this little kiln since I mostly wanted to make "eyes" and nuggets of any color. Works beautifully with the thin fire paper. Have been having a ball with it.
Cons : Now wishing I had the $ to buy a larger kiln since there aren't any molds. Didn't care for the fiber paper or instructions.

  •   It's doings what's it supposed to do
By on
Pros : For a project I needed opal glass nuggets from 10 to 15 mm (approximately) and the ready-made were not quite good - limited colors do not allow to create "shadowed" realistic effect. With this small kiln I solved my problem easily. Allows to make 3-5 nuggets at a time even with the simplest microwave I used - 650 watts or so. It's simple, handy, inexpensive and allows to create some small but interesting details for a stained glass project if you need something like a bud or a bee and do not want (or there is just no space) the soldered lines.
Cons : None so far.

  •   Instructions Seriously Lacking!
By on
Pros : Good for firing small pendants and earrings. Much cheaper than a regular kiln. Also, you do not need a special area for a real kiln. It's also quick and relatively easy once you work out the best way to use it.
Cons : The instructions are poor! They only mention firing on full power. I have found this does not work well. I ruined a lot of glass to start with. I have found that 3-4 minutes on 50% power to slowly warm up the kiln and then 3-4 minutes on 75% power works well. This also depends on whether you are fusing 2 or 3 pieces of glass. It is recommended not to fuse more than 6mm in total. It is also fine to have a quick peek to check how the fusing is going. Some instructions tell you not to peek under any circumstances. The other problem I had initially was that the paper I was provided left the piece with sharp edges and a rough bottom. Now that I use Bullseye thinfire paper I have no problems with this.
Other Thoughts : More detailed instructions would have been really useful. Hope all this helps new people to fusing without the enormous amount of frustrations that I have experienced.

Pros : Quick
Cons : Does not do a good job.
Other Thoughts : I've fused glass for several years and thought this would be fun. Wrong. Ruined pieces. Waste of time and money.

  •   Thermal Shock!!
By on
Pros : really can't give any pro's.
Cons : I am experienced glass fuser and tried this little kiln and was very disappointed. I knew it wouldn't fuse as well, but I have NEVER experienced thermal shock until I used this kiln. I called the company that makes it and they told me to only use thier glass or at least don't mix with another brand and that dichroic, red and green glass are more likely to cause problems than other glass. Also, low and slow is the best way to fire, don't just put it in and run it at full until you know what the kiln/glass will do. This would have been good to know, they need to update the manual. I'm sure this is a fine unit for the occasional fuser, but don't expect any masterpieces to come from it.
Other Thoughts : Back to the drawing board.

  •   microwave kiln
By on
Pros : I have totally enjoyed my kiln. I have made some awesome pieces in no time. It couldn't be easier. It saves my bigger kiln for my bigger projects.
Cons : Can't find any real problems just have to take time to figure out right times for items.

  •   Quick and easy, complements by bigger kilns
By on
Pros : Small and quick to fire, uses much less electricity and takes very little time. Perfect for a dorm or apartment. Useful for someone not wanting to spend a lot to get started doing fusing.
Cons : Small size, but this is also an advantage.
Other Thoughts : I bought this awhile back, and it sat in a closet for a few months. I've got a large Jen Ken kiln and a smaller 9" kiln that I use for bead annealing and smaller fusing. I've used the 9" kiln for making nuggets and jewelry, but sometimes I just want to test some glass reactions, or fuse some coarse frit to make nuggets or pieces of small jewelry. This is PERFECT for making nuggets...I can fuse coarse frit in 3 minutes, and within about 8 minutes it's ready to use. Previously I used the 9" to do the same thing, and it took about 2 hours. This is a time-saver and a conveniently portable little kiln. I'm taking it to my parent's RV rally in a few weeks to make custom jewelry pieces for rally attendees.

  •   fantastic learning tool!!
By on
Pros : The microwave kiln is a wonderful way to learn if fusing is for you. I have had mine for 2 weeks and have been making some fantastic items. I wasn't sure I wanted a kiln but now I am saving for one. I will still use the microwave kiln just because you can do so much with it and the waiting to see what you have done is so short. It is worth the money as long as you understand you will only be able to do small items in it.
Cons : The instructions could be a little better as far as letting you know what glass is fusible in it. I had to contact a friend to find out just how much experimenting I could do being totally new to fusing. Could also give a little more info on adjusting fusing times depending on the watts of your microwave, I over fused my first piece and left some major screwed up places in my kiln but it is still working great.
Other Thoughts : I would totally recommend anyone who is considering a kiln or who just wants to play around with out putting out big bucks to try this kiln. I teach mosaics and now several of my students have decided they want to try a microwave kiln too. It is very addicting once you start fusing you don't want to stop!

  •   AbsolutelyThe Best!!!!!
By on
Pros : Very easy to use Excellent results Great for beginners who want nice pieces without the big expense. Fantastic way to practice so you can move into a bigger kiln Buy it!!!!! What do you have to lose
Cons : Can be a bit tricky at first but don't let this fool you!!!!! A bit pricey, but then again, I think it is unique and good technology
Other Thoughts : I LOVE this kiln. I am a beginner in the glass bead making community. Having made some real cool pieces with my hot head, I thought I would try this. I am getting awesome results and starting to build my stock for some spring and summer art shows. You really can't make a mistake because even the mistakes turn out cool. I have a dedicated microwave that I just use for my glasswork. Don't let this bother you. You can pick one up for little money at a rummage sale or a resale shop. I can't say enough good things about this kiln.
